10:26 AM EDT, 05/12/2026 (MT Newswires) -- In Canada, investors get an update on the state of the residential sector with the release of April housing starts on Friday, said National Bank of Canada.

Judging by the data on building permits, the latter could have increased to 245,000 in annualized terms, led by the multi-unit segment, noted the bank. Existing home sales, for their part, may have edged up 0.2% nationally in the fourth month of the

year, led by stronger sales in Toronto and Calgary.

In other news, also on Friday, manufacturing sales may have expanded 3.5% month over month in March, on increases in the oil and coal products and transportation equipment subsectors, stated National Bank.

On Wednesday, the Bank of Canada will publish the summary of deliberations by the Governing Council for the policy decision that was announced on April 29.

A speech by External Deputy Governor Michelle Alexopoulos is also on the central bank's agenda. It will take place on Wednesday, before the Ottawa Economics Association (OEA) and the Canadian Association of Business Economics (CABE).

In general the bond market is volatile, and fixed income securities carry interest rate risk. (As interest rates rise, bond prices usually fall, and vice versa. This effect is usually more pronounced for longer-term securities.) Fixed income securities also carry inflation risk and credit and default risks for both issuers and counterparties. Unlike individual bonds, most bond funds do not have a maturity date, so avoiding losses caused by price volatility by holding them until maturity is not possible.

Lower-quality debt securities generally offer higher yields, but also involve greater risk of default or price changes due to potential changes in the credit quality of the issuer. Any fixed income security sold or redeemed prior to maturity may be subject to loss.
