RBC Previews This Week's Housing Data in Canada

10:33 AM EST, 01/12/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Canada will see the release of existing home resale data for December on Thursday, as well as December housing starts on Friday, said RBC.

December home resale data on Thursday is expected to show a "lackluster" finish to 2025 as activity and prices moderated, particularly in key markets like southern Ontario and British Columbia, where inventory is keeping buyers in a stronger negotiating position, noted the bank.

Still, RBC continues to expect improvement in the Canadian economy, and the lagged impact of lower interest rates will support a gradual pick up in housing markets in 2026.

The bank looks for housing starts on Friday to tick higher following a jump in permit issuance in October and estimates overall gross domestic product growth to remain modestly positive in Q4 with continued growth in consumer spending. It sees housing starts at 265,000 versus 255,000 in November.

The advance estimate of retail sales showed a 1.2% month-over-month increase in November.

In general the bond market is volatile, and fixed income securities carry interest rate risk. (As interest rates rise, bond prices usually fall, and vice versa. This effect is usually more pronounced for longer-term securities.) Fixed income securities also carry inflation risk and credit and default risks for both issuers and counterparties. Unlike individual bonds, most bond funds do not have a maturity date, so avoiding losses caused by price volatility by holding them until maturity is not possible.

Lower-quality debt securities generally offer higher yields, but also involve greater risk of default or price changes due to potential changes in the credit quality of the issuer. Any fixed income security sold or redeemed prior to maturity may be subject to loss.
