Bank of France to revise down estimates for 2026 French economic growth, says Villeroy
BY Reuters | ECONOMIC | 03:00 AM EDTPARIS, June 1 (Reuters) - The Bank of France will revise down its estimates for 2026 economic growth when it updates its forecasts in mid-June to reflect "the bad surprise" of the first quarter, the outgoing head of France's central bank said on Monday.
France's economy shrank slightly in the first quarter, final data from statistics office INSEE showed last Friday, missing the preliminary reading of 0.0% for the euro zone's second-largest economy.
"There will therefore be several scenarios, but growth forecasts for 2026 will, given this negative surprise in the first quarter, be revised downwards compared with those we had in March. Even though these growth forecasts will stay positive in most scenarios," Francois Villeroy de Galhau told Radio Classique.
