April US Housing Starts Fall, Permits Rebound, Completions Up Again
BY MT Newswires | ECONOMIC | 08:42 AM EDT08:42 AM EDT, 05/21/2026 (MT Newswires) -- April housing starts fell by 2.8% from the previous month to a 1.465 million annual rate, compared with expectations compiled by Bloomberg as of 7:30 am ET for a 1.410 million rate after an increase to a 1.507 million pace in March.
Building permits jumped by 5.8% to a 1.442 million rate in April, above the 1.384 million rate expected and following a decrease to a 1.363 million rate in March. Homes permitted but not started decreased, so the outlook is mixed for a starts rebound next month.
Home completions increased by 4.8% to a 1.449 million rate after a 4.4% gain in the previous month. Completions were down 2% year-over-year.
