US Dollar Rises Early Thursday Ahead of Jobless Claims, Federal Reserve Appearances

07:24 AM EDT, 03/26/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The US dollar rose against its major trading partners early Thursday, except for a decline versus the yen, ahead of the release of weekly jobless claims at 8:30 am ET, followed by weekly natural gas stocks at 10:30 am ET and the Kansas City Federal Reserve's manufacturing reading for March at 11:00 am ET.

Fed Governor Lisa Cook leads off a slate of appearances by Fed officials at 4:00 pm ET. Fed Governor Stephen Miran is due to speak at 6:30 pm ET, followed by Fed Vice Chair Philip Jefferson at 7:00 pm ET and Fed Governor Michael Barr at 7:10 pm ET.

A quick summary of foreign exchange activity heading into Thursday:

EUR/USD fell to 1.1556 from 1.1562 at Wednesday's US close and 1.1599 at the same time Wednesday morning. Eurozone private sector loan growth slowed in February, according to data released earlier Thursday. European Central Bank Vice President Luis de Guindos said overnight that the conflict in Iraq has so far had minimal impact on the European financial system, according to the Wall Street Journal. The next European Central Bank meeting is scheduled for April 30.

GBP/USD fell to 1.3356 from 1.3366 at the Wednesday US close and 1.3408 at the same time Wednesday morning. UK consumer confidence data for March is due to be released at 10:01 pm Thursday. The next Bank of England meeting is scheduled for April 30.

USD/JPY fell to 159.4910 from 159.4796 at the Wednesday US close but was above a level of 158.8890 at the same time Wednesday morning. Japanese corporate services price growth accelerated in February, according to data released overnight. The next Bank of Japan meeting is scheduled for April 27-28.

USD/CAD rose to 1.3831 from 1.3815 at the Wednesday US close and 1.3795 at the same time Wednesday morning. Canadian wholesale sales data for February and weekly earnings data for January are due to be released at 8:30 am ET. Bank of Canada Senior Deputy Governor Carolyn Rogers is due to speak at 12:00 pm ET. The next Bank of Canada meeting is scheduled for April 29.
