February Michigan Consumer Sentiment Revised Downwards from Preliminary Print, Up From January
BY MT Newswires | ECONOMIC | 02/20/26 10:12 AM EST10:12 AM EST, 02/20/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The University of Michigan consumer sentiment index was revised downwards Friday to a reading of 56.6 for February from the 57.3 print in the preliminary estimate, compared with expectations for no revision in a survey compiled by Bloomberg.
That was higher than the final reading of 56.4 in January.
The current conditions index was revised downwards to 56.6 from a 58.3 preliminary estimate, higher than the 55.4 reading in January, while the expectations index was unchanged at 56.6. The index was 57.0 in January.
Respondents expected a 3.4% inflation rate over the next year and 3.3% annual inflation over the next five years, down from 4.0% and 3.3% respectively in January. The one-year rate was the lowest since January 2025.
The twice-monthly Michigan Sentiment index measures consumer sentiment early in the current month (the preliminary estimate) and is then revised later in the month (the final estimate).
The headline index is a combination of the current assessment and expectations for the near future. An increase in the reading suggests consumers are more confident, a positive for stocks if that confidence translates into spending. Increased demand is usually inflationary, a negative for bonds.
