U.S., Europe Economic Indicators Expected to Bolster Commodity Markets, Commerzbank Says

06:02 AM EST, 02/17/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The economic indicators for the U.S. and Europe due to be released are likely to give the commodity markets a boost, keeping sentiment on the markets for cyclical commodities fundamentally positive, Commerzbank said in a Friday note.

The U.S. economy is likely to have grown strongly again in the fourth quarter, and the purchasing managers' index for the eurozone are expected to have surged, the bank noted.

However, the talks between the U.S. and Iran will be crucial for the oil price, according to Commerzbank. The first indirect talks were considered constructive, but it is unclear how and when they will continue.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated he is considering sending a second aircraft carrier to the region if no agreement is reached, and the U.S. is threatening to seize oil tankers transporting Iranian oil, the bank said.

"The situation therefore remains tense and justifies a risk premium for the time being," Commerzbank said.

In general the bond market is volatile, and fixed income securities carry interest rate risk. (As interest rates rise, bond prices usually fall, and vice versa. This effect is usually more pronounced for longer-term securities.) Fixed income securities also carry inflation risk and credit and default risks for both issuers and counterparties. Unlike individual bonds, most bond funds do not have a maturity date, so avoiding losses caused by price volatility by holding them until maturity is not possible.

Lower-quality debt securities generally offer higher yields, but also involve greater risk of default or price changes due to potential changes in the credit quality of the issuer. Any fixed income security sold or redeemed prior to maturity may be subject to loss.
