08:25 AM EST, 02/04/2026 (MT Newswires) -- ADP's monthly measure of private payrolls showed a 22,000 increase in January, below expectations compiled by Bloomberg for an increase of 45,000.

The January gain followed a downwardly-revised 37,000 jobs increase in December.

By sector, goods-producing jobs rose by 1,000, while service-providing jobs were up 21,000, with education and health services jobs up 74,000 but professional services jobs down 57,000.

"Job creation took a step back in 2025, with private employers adding 398,000 jobs, down from 771,000 in 2024," said Nela Richardson, chief economist at ADP. "While we've seen a continuous and dramatic slowdown in job creation for the past three years, wage growth has remained stable."

In January, wage growth for job-stayers rose by 4.5% year-over-year, little changed from the previous month, while job-changers saw a 6.4% year-over-year gain, slower than the 6.6% increase seen in December.

In general the bond market is volatile, and fixed income securities carry interest rate risk. (As interest rates rise, bond prices usually fall, and vice versa. This effect is usually more pronounced for longer-term securities.) Fixed income securities also carry inflation risk and credit and default risks for both issuers and counterparties. Unlike individual bonds, most bond funds do not have a maturity date, so avoiding losses caused by price volatility by holding them until maturity is not possible.

Lower-quality debt securities generally offer higher yields, but also involve greater risk of default or price changes due to potential changes in the credit quality of the issuer. Any fixed income security sold or redeemed prior to maturity may be subject to loss.
