BMO on The Day Ahead in Canada

07:57 AM EST, 12/19/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Canada will release retail sales data for October and preliminary November at 8:30 a.m. ET on Friday, said Bank of Montreal (BMO).

The retail sales report will give the bank the last piece of data for the October real gross domestic product "puzzle." Spending is likely to be little changed in the month, or down a modest 0.5% excluding autos.

Volumes should nudge higher in the month.

BMO will have an eye on the flash estimate for November heading into the holiday season. All pieces of data considered, the bank is still likely tracking a 0.2% decline in October real GDP, which is due out next Tuesday.

Investors will also get the New Housing Price Index (NHPI) from Statistics Canada on Friday at 8:30 a.m. ET for November, as well as household credit figures for October, pointed out BMO.

In general the bond market is volatile, and fixed income securities carry interest rate risk. (As interest rates rise, bond prices usually fall, and vice versa. This effect is usually more pronounced for longer-term securities.) Fixed income securities also carry inflation risk and credit and default risks for both issuers and counterparties. Unlike individual bonds, most bond funds do not have a maturity date, so avoiding losses caused by price volatility by holding them until maturity is not possible.

Lower-quality debt securities generally offer higher yields, but also involve greater risk of default or price changes due to potential changes in the credit quality of the issuer. Any fixed income security sold or redeemed prior to maturity may be subject to loss.
