November Michigan Consumer Sentiment Revised Up From Preliminary Print, Still Down From October
BY MT Newswires | ECONOMIC | 11/21/25 10:08 AM EST10:08 AM EST, 11/21/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The University of Michigan consumer sentiment index was revised higher Friday to a reading of 51.0 for November from the 50.3 print in the preliminary estimate, compared with expectations for a smaller upward revision to 50.6 in a survey compiled by Bloomberg as of 7:45 am ET.
That was still below the final reading of 53.6 in October.
"After the federal shutdown ended, sentiment lifted slightly from its mid-month reading," Michigan said. "However, consumers remain frustrated about the persistence of high prices and weakening incomes."
The current conditions index was revised down to 51.1 from a 52.3 preliminary estimate, below the 58.6 reading in October, while the expectations index was revised up to 51.0 from 49.0. The index was 50.3 in October.
Respondents expected a 4.5% inflation rate over the next year and 3.4% annual inflation over the next five years, down from 4.6% and 3.9% respectively in October.
The twice-monthly Michigan Sentiment index measures consumer sentiment early in the current month (the preliminary estimate) and is then revised later in the month (the final estimate).
The headline index is a combination of the current assessment and expectations for the near future. An increase in the reading suggests consumers are more confident, a positive for stocks if that confidence translates into spending. Increased demand is usually inflationary, a negative for bonds.
