SANTIAGO, Nov 18 (Reuters) - Chile's economy contracted 0.1% in the third quarter from the previous three-month period, central bank data showed on Tuesday, in contrast with market expectations of a 0.1% expansion in a Reuters poll.

The contraction compared with a 0.4% expansion in the second quarter, and marked the end to four consecutive quarters of growth.

According to the central bank, the quarterly economic activity was hampered mainly by the key mining sector.

On an annual basis, gross domestic product grew 1.6% in the period, also below a 1.9% growth forecasted by economists. "Mining declined, affected by lower copper extraction," the monetary institution said in a statement, down 6.5% annually.

Chile, the world's largest copper miner, saw its production of the red metal hit by an

accident at El Teniente mine

-Codelco's most profitable operation- late July.

In general the bond market is volatile, and fixed income securities carry interest rate risk. (As interest rates rise, bond prices usually fall, and vice versa. This effect is usually more pronounced for longer-term securities.) Fixed income securities also carry inflation risk and credit and default risks for both issuers and counterparties. Unlike individual bonds, most bond funds do not have a maturity date, so avoiding losses caused by price volatility by holding them until maturity is not possible.

Lower-quality debt securities generally offer higher yields, but also involve greater risk of default or price changes due to potential changes in the credit quality of the issuer. Any fixed income security sold or redeemed prior to maturity may be subject to loss.
