Desjardins Comments on Canada's Unexpected August GDP Drop
BY MT Newswires | ECONOMIC | 10/31/25 11:46 AM EDT11:46 AM EDT, 10/31/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Desjardins on Friday commented on an unexpected drop in Canada August Gross Domestic Product.
" The Canadian economy continued to sputter in August and September. After a brief return to growth in July, GDP contracted 0.3% in August, missing analyst estimates for a flat reading. Weakness was widespread across several key sectors. The factory sector continued to struggle, extending its multi-year downward trend in the face of US protectionism. The flight attendants' strike, which occurred in August, also weighed heavily on the transportation sector. Overall, weakness in the economy remains broad-based, with only 43% of sectors posting positive growth over the past three months, well below the historical average of roughly 60%," macro strategist Tiago Figueiredo wrote.
