Brazil jobless rate remains at record low in latest quarter
BY Reuters | ECONOMIC | 10/31/25 09:35 AM EDTSAO PAULO, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Brazil's unemployment rate remained at a record low of 5.6% in the three months through September, data from agency IBGE showed on Friday, broadly in line with expectations.
The labor market in Latin America's largest economy is showing resilience despite high interest rates. Brazil's jobless rate, which economists polled by Reuters had expected at 5.5%, dropped from 5.8% in the previous rolling quarter.
Brazil's unemployed population has fallen to 6.045 million, its lowest level since the historical series began in 2012, IBGE said in a statement.
Survey manager Adriana Beringuy said she expects the decline to continue through 2025 due to recent high employment levels.
Brazil's Labor Ministry on Thursday reported the creation of 213,002 net formal jobs in September, the highest since April, and above the 180,750 expected by economists in a Reuters poll.
The labor market's dynamism has raised concerns among policymakers, who indicated in their latest monetary policy decision that interest rates will remain unchanged for an extended period.
Brazil's benchmark Selic rate has been held steady at 15%, a near 20-year high, since July, when the central bank halted an aggressive tightening cycle that had increased it by 450 basis points in an effort to curb inflation. (Reporting by Isabel Teles; Editing by Alexander Smith)
