Scotiabank Previews Bank of Canada Governor's Speech on Thursday
BY MT Newswires | ECONOMIC | 10/16/25 11:35 AM EDT11:35 AM EDT, 10/16/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem is set to speak at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in a moderated session starting at 1:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, said Scotiabank.
No published remarks are expected, no press conference is scheduled but there will be audience Q&A and a webcast available on the PIE website, noted the bank.
Scotiabank expects Macklem to point out that jobs rebounded, but the trend is weak. Gross domestic product growth is weak and spare capacity continues to build.
Will Macklem opt to hold until he sees the budget? Is he committed to meaningful insurance stimulus, which one extra 25bps cut is not?, asked Scotiank. Might Macklem intimate Canada is at the fine-tuning stage for monetary policy adjustments, which can merit insertion of buzz words like 'gradual', or former Governor Stephen Poloz's line from 2015 that policy adjustments at such a stage don't need to go back-to-back in a straight line while there is merit to keeping some powder dry?
Another possible topic may be financial regulations in Canada, stated the bank. Canada's federal government is dragging its feet compared with other jurisdictions when it comes to open banking, real-time payments systems, and stablecoin as such holding back innovation in Canada, especially in financial technology.
