September ADP US Private Payrolls Fall Unexpectedly, Partially Reflects Benchmark Changes

08:35 AM EDT, 10/01/2025 (MT Newswires) -- ADP's monthly measure of private payrolls showed a 32,000 decrease in September, compared with expectations compiled by Bloomberg as of 7:50 am ET for an increase of 51,000.

The September decrease followed a downwardly revised 3,000 drop in August.

ADP said that it benchmarked its data to the Bureau of Labor Statistic's Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, the same as BLS does with its payrolls survey. Without those updates, September ADP private payrolls would have been up 11,000.

By sector, goods-producing jobs fell by 3,000, led by a 5,000 decrease in construction sector jobs, while service-providing jobs were down 28,000, with leisure and hospitality jobs down 19,000. Education and health services jobs rose by 33,000.

"Despite the strong economic growth we saw in the second quarter, this month's release further validates what we've been seeing in the labor market, that US employers have been cautious with hiring," said Nela Richardson, chief economist at ADP.

In general the bond market is volatile, and fixed income securities carry interest rate risk. (As interest rates rise, bond prices usually fall, and vice versa. This effect is usually more pronounced for longer-term securities.) Fixed income securities also carry inflation risk and credit and default risks for both issuers and counterparties. Unlike individual bonds, most bond funds do not have a maturity date, so avoiding losses caused by price volatility by holding them until maturity is not possible.

Lower-quality debt securities generally offer higher yields, but also involve greater risk of default or price changes due to potential changes in the credit quality of the issuer. Any fixed income security sold or redeemed prior to maturity may be subject to loss.
