Japan PM contender Koizumi wants government, BOJ to share common view on policy

TOKYO, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Shinjiro Koizumi, a top contender to become Japan's next premier, said it was important for the government and central bank to share a common understanding on the direction of economic policy, the Nikkei newspaper reported.

"I hope to achieve a positive economic cycle with the government's economic policy and the Bank of Japan's monetary policy serving as two wheels of a car," Koizumi was quoted as saying in an interview with Nikkei that was conducted on Tuesday and published on Wednesday.

The remarks came amid growing market expectations the BOJ will raise interest rates as soon as its next policy meeting on October 29-30, following a hawkish board split at last month's rate review.

Currently farm minister, Koizumi is seen as a frontrunner in the ruling party's leadership race to be held on Saturday.

In general the bond market is volatile, and fixed income securities carry interest rate risk. (As interest rates rise, bond prices usually fall, and vice versa. This effect is usually more pronounced for longer-term securities.) Fixed income securities also carry inflation risk and credit and default risks for both issuers and counterparties. Unlike individual bonds, most bond funds do not have a maturity date, so avoiding losses caused by price volatility by holding them until maturity is not possible.

Lower-quality debt securities generally offer higher yields, but also involve greater risk of default or price changes due to potential changes in the credit quality of the issuer. Any fixed income security sold or redeemed prior to maturity may be subject to loss.
