Sector Update: Financial Stocks Edge Higher Friday Afternoon

01:51 PM EDT, 09/19/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Financial stocks edged higher in Friday afternoon trading with the NYSE Financial Index and the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) each gaining 0.2%.

The Philadelphia Housing Index fell 1.2%, and the Real Estate Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLRE) advanced 0.1%.

Bitcoin (BTC-USD) fell 1% to $115,930, and the yield for 10-year US Treasuries rose 3 basis points to 4.13%.

In regulatory news, the US Securities and Exchange Commission will propose a rule change after President Donald Trump suggested moving quarterly earnings reports to a semiannual schedule, CNBC reported, citing an interview with SEC Chair Paul Atkins.

In corporate news, Brighthouse Financial (BHF) is in advanced talks over a potential $65 to $70 a share takeover by a consortium led by Aquarian, valuing the annuity provider at up to $4 billion, Bloomberg reported. Brighthouse shares jumped 30%.

Houlihan Lokey (HLI) was chosen as a financial adviser to the creditors of telecom company Altice International for debt talks, Bloomberg reported. Houlihan shares eased 0.2%.

BlackRock (BLK) and Vanguard slashed the number of meetings with company executives this year amid new guidance that makes it harder to discuss subjects such as climate change and diversity, Reuters reported. BlackRock (BLK) shares rose 0.2%.
