10:17 AM EDT, 09/19/2025 (MT Newswires) -- State-level data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics Friday showed the unemployment rate rose in three states in August, fell in two and held steady elsewhere.

The unemployment rate increases were in Maryland and Delaware, where it rose by 0.2 percentage point each, followed by Minnesota where it rose by 0.1%. The rate fell by 0.3 percentage point in Colorado and 0.1 percentage point in Alabama.

South Dakota had the lowest rate at 1.9% while Washington D.C had the highest at 6%.

The national unemployment rate was reported at 4.3% in August, up from 4.2% in July.

Nonfarm payrolls rose in Utah, fell in Washington D.C and were little changed elsewhere. Nationwide nonfarm payrolls increased by 22,000 in August after a 79,000 gain in July.

In general the bond market is volatile, and fixed income securities carry interest rate risk. (As interest rates rise, bond prices usually fall, and vice versa. This effect is usually more pronounced for longer-term securities.) Fixed income securities also carry inflation risk and credit and default risks for both issuers and counterparties. Unlike individual bonds, most bond funds do not have a maturity date, so avoiding losses caused by price volatility by holding them until maturity is not possible.

Lower-quality debt securities generally offer higher yields, but also involve greater risk of default or price changes due to potential changes in the credit quality of the issuer. Any fixed income security sold or redeemed prior to maturity may be subject to loss.
