US Initial Jobless Claims Reverse in Week Ended Sept. 13
BY MT Newswires | ECONOMIC | 09/18/25 08:44 AM EDT08:44 AM EDT, 09/18/2025 (MT Newswires) -- US initial jobless claims fell by 33,000 to a level of 231,000 in the employment survey week ended Sept. 13, more than reversing an increase of 28,000 claims to a level of 264,000 in the previous week.
Expectations were for a level of 240,000 claims in survey of analysts compiled by Bloomberg as of 7:40 am ET. Initial claims were at a level of 234,000 in the employment survey week ended Aug. 16.
The four-week moving average fell by 750 to 240,000 after rising by 10,000 to a level of 240,750 in the previous week.
Insured jobless claims fell by 7,000 to 1,920,000 in the week ended Sept. 6.
The weekly initial jobless claims data released by the US Labor Department measures filings for unemployment insurance benefits. Initial filings are reported through the previous Saturday, while those already on benefits are measured with a one-week lag.
A decrease in claims suggests a stronger labor market, a positive for the US economy and stocks, but a negative for bonds as it suggests wage growth that could lead to inflation.
