ING Sees Hungary's Central Bank Keeping Rates Unchanged in 2025 After Tuesday's Hold

12:15 PM EDT, 08/26/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Hungary's central bank (MNB) opted to maintain the base rate at 6.50% on Tuesday, marking the eleventh consecutive on-hold decision, said ING.

The general stance remained hawkish, with no new messages emerging, wrote the bank in a note to clients.

The strong messages regarding the need to anchor inflation expectations and unchanged forward guidance should be convincing enough to show what the MNB intends to do for the rest of the year, stated ING.

The bank believes that the MNB is prepared to keep interest rates at their current level for the foreseeable future.

Against this backdrop, UBS assumes that the policy rate will remain at 6.50% for the rest of the year. However, the bank cannot rule out the possibility of a deviation from this towards the end of the year, particularly if major central banks adopt a more dovish approach in contrast to recent market expectations.

In general the bond market is volatile, and fixed income securities carry interest rate risk. (As interest rates rise, bond prices usually fall, and vice versa. This effect is usually more pronounced for longer-term securities.) Fixed income securities also carry inflation risk and credit and default risks for both issuers and counterparties. Unlike individual bonds, most bond funds do not have a maturity date, so avoiding losses caused by price volatility by holding them until maturity is not possible.

Lower-quality debt securities generally offer higher yields, but also involve greater risk of default or price changes due to potential changes in the credit quality of the issuer. Any fixed income security sold or redeemed prior to maturity may be subject to loss.
