Canada's Housing Starts Are Holding Up Well, Says BMO
BY MT Newswires | ECONOMIC | 08/19/25 07:07 AM EDT07:07 AM EDT, 08/19/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Canadian housing starts jumped to 294,000 annualized units
in July, one of the highest levels in the 35-year history of the series, noted Bank of Montreal (BMO) after Monday's data from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. (CMHC).
Smoothing out the monthly volatility, it's clear that starts have held up well above pre-pandemic levels, said the bank.
That's despite numerous headwinds, including: supply chain disruptions, a reversal in surging immigration flows, and in some regions a glut of inventory.
Even with this impressive resilience, BMO stated that starts are well short of the over 500,000/year pace that many policymakers and think tanks have called for -- the fact is that, in the regions where market conditions are still supportive, the construction sector is already firing on
all cylinders.
