Existing Homes Sales Growth Expected to Slow Further in May

02:35 PM EDT, 06/20/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The National Association of Realtors' measure of US existing-home sales is expected to slow to a 3.95 million annual rate in May, based on a survey compiled by Bloomberg, after falling by 0.4% to a 4.0 million rate in April.

Existing-home sales were at a 4.06 million rate in May 2024, so the year-over-year change would be negative.

The data are scheduled to be released at 10:00 am ET Monday.

The pending home sales index, also produced by the NAR, fell by 6.3% in April and was down 2.5% from year ago. That measure is taken at contract signing and is meant to foreshadow movements in existing homes closings a month or two out.

The median sales price was 1.8% above its year-ago level in April.

Recent mortgage application data from the Mortgage Bankers Association indicated that mortgage rates moved higher in early May before falling toward the end of the month.

Home building data for May released on June 18 showed declines for building permits and housing starts, but an increase in home completions.

The National Association of Home Builders reported on June 17 that builder sentiment declined further in May due to high mortgage rates and tariff and economic uncertainty.

In general the bond market is volatile, and fixed income securities carry interest rate risk. (As interest rates rise, bond prices usually fall, and vice versa. This effect is usually more pronounced for longer-term securities.) Fixed income securities also carry inflation risk and credit and default risks for both issuers and counterparties. Unlike individual bonds, most bond funds do not have a maturity date, so avoiding losses caused by price volatility by holding them until maturity is not possible.

Lower-quality debt securities generally offer higher yields, but also involve greater risk of default or price changes due to potential changes in the credit quality of the issuer. Any fixed income security sold or redeemed prior to maturity may be subject to loss.
