LONDON, Nov 11 (Reuters) - The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) said on Monday it has appointed former European Central Bank official Pablo Hernandez de Cos as its general manager for a five-year term, starting July 1 2025.

De Cos previously headed the Bank of Spain. He will replace BIS General Manager Agustin Carstens, whose term concludes at the end of June 2025, the BIS said in a statement.

"It was essential for the Board to find an excellent leader to succeed Mr Carstens, who has been extremely successful in leading and transforming the BIS in these challenging times," Francois Villeroy de Galhau, chair of the BIS board of directors, who also heads France's central bank, said in the statement.

"Mr Hernandez de Cos is a person of remarkable calibre and global experience, and we are fully confident that he will embody the spirit of international trust and technical excellence on which the BIS is built." (Reporting by Dhara Ranasinghe; editing by Yoruk Bahceli)

In general the bond market is volatile, and fixed income securities carry interest rate risk. (As interest rates rise, bond prices usually fall, and vice versa. This effect is usually more pronounced for longer-term securities.) Fixed income securities also carry inflation risk and credit and default risks for both issuers and counterparties. Unlike individual bonds, most bond funds do not have a maturity date, so avoiding losses caused by price volatility by holding them until maturity is not possible.

Lower-quality debt securities generally offer higher yields, but also involve greater risk of default or price changes due to potential changes in the credit quality of the issuer. Any fixed income security sold or redeemed prior to maturity may be subject to loss.
