Oct 10 (Reuters) - Wall Street's main indexes fell at the open on Thursday, after data showed U.S. inflation was higher than expected in September, keeping the Federal Reserve on track to ease interest rates by 25 basis points at its next meeting.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 84 points, or 0.14%, at the open to 42,446.37. The S&P 500 fell 13.7 points, or 0.24%, at the open to 5,778.36?, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 91.0 points, or 0.50%, to 18,200.618 at the opening bell. In general the bond market is volatile, and fixed income securities carry interest rate risk. (As interest rates rise, bond prices usually fall, and vice versa. This effect is usually more pronounced for longer-term securities.) Fixed income securities also carry inflation risk and credit and default risks for both issuers and counterparties. Unlike individual bonds, most bond funds do not have a maturity date, so avoiding losses caused by price volatility by holding them until maturity is not possible.

Lower-quality debt securities generally offer higher yields, but also involve greater risk of default or price changes due to potential changes in the credit quality of the issuer. Any fixed income security sold or redeemed prior to maturity may be subject to loss.
