FTSE 100 to Open Flat Ahead of Powell Speech

0637 GMT - The FTSE 100 is expected to open little changed, according to IG, as investors digest remarks from Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey and await a speech from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell later. Bailey said on Monday that interest rates could be lifted before Christmas if needed to stem inflation. In pre-released comments of a speech Powell will deliver to the Senate Banking Committee at 1400 GMT, he said the Fed would raise rates if sustained higher inflation became a serious concern. "It certainly feels like central bankers are becoming much more nervous about what is happening with the global economy, particularly when it comes to prices...," CMC Markets analyst Michael Hewson says. In general the bond market is volatile, and fixed income securities carry interest rate risk. (As interest rates rise, bond prices usually fall, and vice versa. This effect is usually more pronounced for longer-term securities.) Fixed income securities also carry inflation risk and credit and default risks for both issuers and counterparties. Unlike individual bonds, most bond funds do not have a maturity date, so avoiding losses caused by price volatility by holding them until maturity is not possible.

Lower-quality debt securities generally offer higher yields, but also involve greater risk of default or price changes due to potential changes in the credit quality of the issuer. Any fixed income security sold or redeemed prior to maturity may be subject to loss.
